Dr. Artimus Rhodes is the grandfather of Samantha Rhodes and associate of Dr. Daniel Thunder, one of the guardians of the Hidden Mysteries. He appears in a cameo in Johnny Thunder and the Wisdom of the Ancients, but first started out as a minor character in LEGO Atlantis.

Physical Description[]

Dr. Artimus dresses in casual adventurer attire, wearing a white pith helmet and a navy blue plaid shirt. His pants are brown with an accent of gray. He wears a pair of glasses, and features a brown mustache and goatee on his face.

Characteristics[]

Not much is known about Dr. Artimus Rhodes, judging from the film. What is known is that he knew Dr. Charles Kilroy in his earlier years and is one of the guardians of the Hidden Mysteries. However, it is also known that he holds many secrets from others, for fear of being ridiculed. He is also inventive, even coming up with a way to write in his journal while underwater, though he can be brash and think highly of himself at times.

Before Mustache Maniacs Film Co.[]

Dr. Artimus Rhodes was first featured in a teaser game for the then-upcoming LEGO Atlantis line in fall 2009. In the game, players swim around underwater until they find a lost journal. Opening it, players can read the entire story of how Dr. Artimus Rhodes tried to find Atlantis.

According to the journal, Artimus Rhodes set out in 1919 in his sub, the Atlantis Finder, to hunt for the lost city. He tells no one about his expedition, but figures that they might have figured it out anyway, considering the name of his vessel. On his voyage through the depths, he encounters many of the same challenges and warriors that the Deep Sea Salvage Crew faces almost one hundred years later.

Ultimately, he fails, but is rescued by his future wife, Samantha-Morris Rhodes. Later, Mrs. Rhodes gives the journal and pyramid map to her granddaughter Samantha Rhodes, and no more mention is made of Artimus Rhodes.

Trivia[]

  • Samantha's personal sub included in set 7985 City of Atlantis is named "The Artimus" in honor of this character.
  • Only a few official images of this character exist: they are all in his secret journal.
  • In a Spring 2020 canon change, The Secret Journal of Artimus Rhodes was fully canonized, making this character one of the few Mustache Maniacs Film Co. characters to have their back story lifted verbatim from the source material, without being adapted in any way. It is worth mentioning that this still co-exists with the character information added for Johnny Thunder and the Wisdom of the Ancients.
